Oh yes, he has been a parent in the rink, too.Ĭarson says you are "bang on" and both he and Dennis put thumbs down on select hockey for this age group. Jon, I asked both Paul Carson, the director of hockey development for Hockey Canada, and Paul Dennis, a sport psychologist who has been a teacher, coached minor and major junior hockey, president of the Toronto Marlies and is now head of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The initial feedback I have received is you will spend your time picking up children who can't skate and I disagree here as we only have maybe 5 kids out of 50 who are level 1 Do you feel introducing skills development at age 5-6 with a focus on 1/2/3 level players is a good one? Do you feel the idea of select is a good one for age 5-6 tyke, or advise to wait for Novice 7-8?Ģ. I'm not sure if the whole idea of picking teams of good/not with 5-6-year-old children is a good idea.ġ. Those kids are already involved through their parents and if we had select hockey they will be even further ahead of the rest. There is talk about select being a good idea, but I am more interested in developing the 1, 2, 3 level skaters through skills development, rather than be worried about the 4 level skaters at this age who have reached this level through camps and other methods. We have kids age 5-6 and are considering the idea of a select team. I am a governor for tyke hockey and I was wondering about your views on tyke level hockey. ![]()
